This is a crucial point. Voters were assured they would get a deal, indeed that it was guaranteed. If leave campaigners have changed their mind and decided a deal is not desirable that’s another thing but anyone who lived through that campaign knows it’s not what was promised.
Indeed if the prime minister were a more nimble political player, she might well have successfully argued that it is she, not the Brexiters, who is seeking to implement the true mandate of the referendum. Alas, as we know, she is not.
Indeed it was the prime minister not the Brexiters who legitimised the idea of no deal in the public consciousness and muddied the referendum result. As in so many things, she is the author of her own travails.
