Crypto lacks trusted and transparent data. Our team has spent the last few months working to address this issue.

We built a community tool for analyzing exchanges and learning step-by-step how the The TIE calculates market data, evaluates exchanges, and scores sentiment.

Due to rampant wash trading, order book spoofing and other manipulative practices, it’s important that the crypto community has a market data feed that is more reflective of true prices and volumes on trustworthy and liquid exchanges.
4/

We developed an eleven step process for evaluating exchanges for inclusion in our new real-time cross-exchange market data feed.

This process was broken down into three categories:

1. Market Surveillance/Regulatory
2. Suspicious Volume Reports
3. Public API Trade Data
5/

Under the Market Surveillance/Regulatory category we investigated whether each exchange used market surveillance tools, had an anti-market manipulation policy, were a FINTRAC or FinCEN MSB, or had a BitLicense.

Exchanges had to satisfy at least one of those criteria.
6/

Some shocking findings from our research, under 50% of exchanges have any formal policies prohibiting market manipulation and less than 25% disclosed the use of internal or third party market surveillance tools to identify bad actors.
7/

Next we looked at how each exchanged performed on our, @Bitwise's, and @BTI___'s suspicious volume reporting.

Links available to each report on slide 7 in the deck: drive.google.com/file/d/1v7-7PU…
8/

Finally, we looked at what public API trade data each exchange made available.

1. Historical Trade Level Data
2. Historical Candlestick Data
3. Live Trade Level Data
4. Live Candlestick Data

To be included in The TIE's feed, an exchange had to satisfy more than 2 criteria.
9/

Some interesting findings:

Only 37% of exchanges publicly offer historical trade level data and only 40% offer historical candlestick data.

88% of exchanges offer live trade level and candlestick data to the public.
10/

After evaluating over 100 exchanges in our initial suspicious volume report, our final real-time market data feed includes 11 exchanges:

@binance @Bitfinex @Bitstamp @BittrexExchange @coinbase @gate_io @Gemini @gopax_kr @krakenfx @Kucoin and @Poloniex
11/

Although it is not included in our methodology, we also made available additional data on each exchange for community use, for example whether the exchange has ever been hacked.

Check out the tool we built here for evaluating exchanges: thetie.io/data-transpare…

Search for individual exchanges, see how exchanges scored on each individual section, and learn more about each trading platform.

With thousands of trading pairs, building a reliable and accurate feed is fundamental to trading and investing.

The TIE calculates aggregated market data across the eleven previously selected exchanges in real-time. Learn how we do it, step-by-step:

We have adjusted pricing and volume metrics across the site to reflect our new market data feed.

We have also made CoinMarketCap volume data available for your comparison. Use whichever you prefer on The TIE or compare the two.
15/

We also made publicly available the step-by-step process that we use to calculate sentiment.

Read more about our process, our sentiment data, and read our research reports to learn about how it has been used to generate alpha. thetie.io/data-transpare…

A bit about The TIE: we are working to build the most powerful platform for crypto traders featuring data analysis, cross-exchange execution/smart-order routing, portfolio management and tax accounting.

We are also launching a suite of institutional data feeds.
17/

Beyond transparency in data, it is important to know about the founding team behind The TIE, see pic.

We are excited to announce that we are closing a round to accelerate our growth, triple the size of our development team, and continue building products to support traders.

We don't claim any of our methodologies are perfect, but we strive to offer the highest grade data in crypto and to be transparent about all of our calculations and processes.
