the city’s website doesn’t list the members of the human rights commission, but there are 14 members present and 5 unclaimed name cards... are there 19 commissioners?!
sometimes i miss the days of no one knowing why there was such a bored looking, ever-present observer at meetings but this is very cute 
i don’t know what i missed at the human rights commission retreat but so far this meeting has been an uncomfortable emotional sharing experience!
apparently the chair election was contentious. only 10 of the i think 18 members were present for the vote, which went 6-4 for shantell. some folks are still working through their feelings about that process.
conflicts of personality are not new for this board.
i am hopeful that a revitalized human rights commission with shantell as chair can overcome the body’s past... difficulties
charlene green says the human rights office has been contacted by several people incarcerated at albemarle charlottesville regional jail about discrimination in access to services
charlene says they’ve also as received some complaints about property managers discriminating against people with criminal histories, which is not a protected class, but more investigation is needed to see if this is disproportionately affecting people of color.
this meeting has been about 85% passive aggressive subtext that i don’t feel qualified to comment on
i may be dreaming. i sometimes have nightmares where i can’t quite understand what’s being discussed at a meeting no matter how hard i try to focus.
discussing how the human rights commission will handle signing onto community statements in the future, charlene green said when CLIHC reached out to her about the march against the belmont apartment evictions, she had no problem supporting it as the office of human rights,
but the situation happened “rather quickly,” too quickly for the commission to have time to evaluate the statement. (apparently the procedure isn’t even to hold a vote - the chair & vice chair alone decide whether the board endorses a group’s statement or action.)
this is perhaps less about hashing out a solid procedure for next time and more about processing people’s disappointment that the commission didn’t manage to endorse the belmont apartments anti eviction demonstration.
huh, apparently they DID manage to endorse the demonstration. so what’s all this EMOTIONAL PROCESSING about? this has been a weird and unproductive meeting. i’m very confused about what anyone is hoping to accomplish.
i wonder if this is just too large a body to function effectively. the work session i observed a few weeks ago with like half the commissioners was productive and encouraging and didn’t have this intense uncomfortable passive aggressive energy.
