I’m a reporter for the ALI Principles of Government Ethics and was on the ALI ethics panel in Washington on Sunday, but I flew back home rather than attend this dinner. He’s in contempt.

I flew home for a much better attraction- my kids’ soccer games yesterday. If @SpeakerPelosi had promised to send the Sergeant at Arms to the ALI dinner (with handcuffs) to arrest the man who is in contempt of Congress, I might have skipped the soccer games to attend the dinner.
Still, watching my daughter score a goal in soccer was much more satisfying than the possibility of watching another Attorney General (I am old enough to remember Big John Mitchell in ‘74) get carted off to the slammer.
AG Barr is now being introduced to the Members of the ALI.
His talk is beginning
His topic -- Nationwide injunctions.
He is quoting Justice Scalia:
"every banana republic has its bill of rights ..."
The Attorney General's ALI talk tonight is on nationwide injunctions.
He is attacking federal courts' injunctions against the Trump Administration attempts to rescind DACA.
He is going into a full fledge assault on the judiciary.
AG Barr is going to complain to ALI Members for the next 45 minutes about the many nationwide injunctions that federal courts have issued against the Trump Administration. DACA, other immigration policies, you name it. Barr wants courts to butt out and let Trump do as he pleases.
AG Barr says that federal courts have issued 37 nationwide injunctions in the first two years of the Trump Administration compared with 2 nationwide injunctions in the first two years of the Obama Administration. And he blames that on the courts....
Whatever ....
AG Barr said tonight that nationwide injunctions against cancelling DACA denied @realDonaldTrump a bargaining chip in negotiations with Congress to get a wall. This led to the shut down, etc.
All the judges' fault.
Because of them Trump couldn't hold DACA hostage to get a wall.

That’s OUR money and under the Constitution you can’t spend it without consent of Congress.
That would be taxation without representation and we won’t stand for it.
Keep it up and you’ll soon learn what the real Tea Party was all about.
Taxation without representation will not be tolerated in America.
This time we don’t have to throw any tea into Boston Harbor.
The impeachment clause let’s us throw YOU out of office.
OUR money— too much of it — is in that bank account. Checks require two signatures. And no, you can’t just change the name of the payee after you get the second signature.

Judge Rao is an excellent addition to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, but she should recuse from a case this closely tied to the personal finances of the man who appointed her just months ago.

Judge Rao is a person of high integrity. People who know her would trust her to be impartial in this case. But that’s not the point. The case is too close to the personal finances of the president who appointed her. That doesn’t work for any judge.
As then attorney Rao and I used to tell the White House staff when we worked together in the White House Counsel’s Office, some things are legally permissible but just look awful....

Now, how about a bill that does something about the much greater risks of studying in the United States?
Pay to play admissions.
Sky high tuition.
Huge student loan debt that one can’t repay.
No health care.

should make sure their bill requires disclosure of the following risks from studying outside the U.S.:

No seats reserved for athletes or children of rich donors.
Free or low tuition.
No student loan debt.
Single payer health care.
Other language for the Smith-Portman bill warning Americans of dangers from studying abroad:
“Most countries won’t allow you to bring an assault rifle. Purchasing one may require a criminal background check, a license or employment in the military or law enforcement.”

Assembled loosely on the corner was a group of well-dressed people. Some were holding signs, some were passing out literature. One fellow was saying something to people as they passed by, struggling to be heard over the traffic.
Protesters? Shane wondered.

During my career handling recounts, we have averaged one statewide recount-able election (excluding for president). Not all of these have resulted in recounts, but almost all have involved some post election legal activity.
My first statewide recount was actually a contest over the 1996 Louisiana Senate election. It was conducted in the US Senate (I was actually hired by the Rules Committee).
That was followed by the 1998 Senate recount in Nevada. Harry Reid had defeated John Ensign, but there were issues involving Washoe County's voting machines, so we did a recount. Reid still won. Dean Heller was the GOP Secretary of State overseeing the recount.
