What is the role of a good advisor, what is the role of the political leadership? (Thread)
After the referendum it is the role of the leadership to say “we will leave the EU”. It is the role of advisors to then describe the models available, their pros, their cons.
The choice is then taken by the leadership. If the leadership says “we want to be out of EU law, no role of the ECJ and we want frictionless trade” a competent advisor has to say: this is not an available option - every historical model tells us we have to choose.
The leadership can then say “we will try to get something new”. The advisor will say “I advise against that, we will waste our time” the leadership says “do it anyway”. The advisor complies.
If the leadership chooses a model that will hurt the UK economy according to most economic models, the advisor has to say so. If the leadership says “we’ll do it anyway - if only for non-economic reasons” the advisor will comply.
