75 years ago today, my father, with a total of over 150,000 troops in the greatest military endeavor in world history landed on the shores of Normandy in France. He went in on Utah Beach, not Omaha Beach, with the engineering and demolition teams led by Teddy Roosevelt, Jr. 1/
2/His job was infiltrating past German lines, blowing up bridges to block Nazi retreat paths. They advanced through France, liberating the grateful nation, on to Berlin, even to Poland & some of the Auschwitz death camps, liberating those remaining alive.
3/ He said the Nazi guards were cowards, "running like dogs when facing a powerful fighting force, the @USArmy & not helpless unarmed civilians." They ran so fast they left doors open, lights on, even cigarettes burning in ash trays when US soldiers swept the offices.
