Whether it is self-improvement or technical learning, we need to be ready to learn before attempting to learn. This is obvious for technical thing, but generally for soft-skills, we justify our stands never really trying to open our mind

There is no learning without reflection & reflection takes time. Don't simply trust conclusions drawn by author, question them, try to understand the underlying principals & learn to do your own thinking
This is only possible if you are reflecting on the information
Don't try to remember what you can derive. And by learning how to arrive at conclusions at your own, you develop your thinking which you can use to solve new problems.
We need to learn to fish our self, not directly eat the fish give to us.

In Kung Fu Panda, shifu trained dragon warrior not by disciplining him but by bribing him with food. Discipline didn't work, food did because he he loved eating.
We need to relate the new knowledge with what we already know or like to remember it

If you are learning technical knowledge, you have to build projects using the knowledge.
If you are learning non-technical, you have to practice the knowledge everyday, until it becomes part of your nature.
I need to practice for 2 months to learn.
Make learning fun & interesting. When we are having fun, we learn faster and can work for longer.
If you check term, neuro-plasticity, the rate at which our brain learns, increases by 2 to 5 times when we are having fun. Imagine it's impact.
