#MI5 is charged with protecting Parliamentary democracy & the UK's economic interests. #MI6 exists to detect & deflect foreign threats. Are they aware that the attempted RW brexit coup is in progress, funded from abroad?
Andrew Parker, head of #MI5 & Alex Younger, head of #MI6, get knighthoods today in the Queen's birthday honours list. Why? For allowing Britain to be consumed by the RW brexit coup? Is that supposed to be a good thing?
#MI5 and #MI6 are directed by the Joint Intelligence Committee, famous for the dodgy "sexed-up" Iraq dossier which contributed to events that snuffed out 1.5 million Iraqi citizen's lives, horrific losses to our service people, the death of Dr David Kelly & the #HuttonInquiry
In turn, the Joint Intelligence Committee is overseen by the Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament (ISC). The ISC's nine members are nominated by the PM and confirmed by Parliament.

1) @UKLabour members - honesty, democracy & the future of the Labour project

In all of this #Brexit mess it needs to be said that there are 2 key fracture points in the Labour Leadership, it is dishonest, and from a party point of view deeply undemocratic

This will undermine it
@UKLabour 2) the current Labour Leadership position is to have a GE in order to negotiate a "better brexit deal"
There is no time for this. We leave in a few months. What's more the EU will not extend A50 so 2 pro Brexit parties can have a GE with the same essential message.
@UKLabour 3) Starmer, McDonnell, Thornberry and others all know this. They know that the EU will not delay A50 and restart negotiations at this stage, especially with a new set of "red lines" around influence & FoM

When they say "this is our position" they say it knowing it's not possible

#brexit seems to be all about feeling over fact and this is especially true of the ReesMogg ERG faction of the Tory right.
I never bought the line that #brexit is about Democracy because most of the Tory right had zero enthusiasm for improving democracy in the UK few of them care about unelected house of lords the unfair FPTP electoral system or transparency on the contrary
Most of the Tory right are interested only in constitutional changes that suit them and if anything strive to be as little democratically accountable as possible.

After a week visiting #Delhi and #Mumbai in #India and talking to people in Universities, thinktanks, business and international trade about #Brexit, a short thread summarising what I heard. /1
The EU is seen primarily as a free trade bloc, and a successful one. Therefore, for the UK to leave in order to pursue 'free trade' is seen as somewhat baffling. /2
UK policy on migration is well-known and the referendum was seen, in part, as the UK turning its back on Europe - but also the world. The refusal to discuss high-skilled migration from India to the UK will prevent discussions on trade. 3

First major discussion point is of course that UK wants #Brexit transition to last until new relationship is in place.

3 things to learn from that:
a) A sense of realism is taking hold in Westminster on #Brexit. As long argued, a time limited transition is dangerous esp. for the UK, as it creates a new cliff edge. There is very little chance of a fully fledged future relationship negotiated, agreed and fully ratified by 2021
b) The EU strategy of making the UK ask for an extension has worked. If the EU had proposed this, it would have seemed like it wants to keep the UK close indefinitely.

Now it is clear that it is the UK, for economic reasons, that needs this potentially very long transition

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
