1) The awful and inhumane treatment of migrant children is finally getting the media treatment it deserves.

Major news orgs are exposing truly horrifying scenes.

I'd like to suggest that we should also use this occasion to discuss the deeper problems leading to this moment.
2) The problems leading to the asylum crisis at the border are vast and complicated, and don't lend themselves to easy answers.

They are going to require a major rethinking and a massive policy response.

3) The Center for American Progress is out with an important new report that suggests a new template for thinking about the awfulness of the migrants' plight and how to alleviate the causes of these migrations.

I wrote up a summary of the report here:

4) A few key points from the report.

First, the conditions spurring these migrations are truly horrific.

Second, they are *not* just efforts to migrate to the U.S. They are part of something larger:

5) Climate change is a driver of migrations. This should cause us to take our international obligations towards migrants more seriously.

6) Overall conditions spurring these migrants may well get *worse.*

This means the long-term challenges demand *more* from us.

It's not morally serious to propose more restrictions, to build walls, and to try to make it harder to seek asylum.

7) Pundits love to say Dems "need an answer" to Trump on the border.

What they really mean is that Ds should lurch in Trump's direction.

No, they shouldn't. The party is now coalescing around their own real agenda. Let's talk about this, too.

has predicted the future of Trumpist nationalism as follows:

"It will double down on denying the ethical responsibilities of global interdependence by building border walls against climate refugees."

That's what we're answering here.
