/ We are horrified to learn of the death of 1-year-old Valeria and her father, Óscar, at our southern border.
/ Over the past several months, we’ve seen how the Trump-Pence administration’s cruel immigration policies are harming LGBTQ and other asylum seekers who are fleeing violence in Central America by leaving them stranded on the U.S.-Mexico border. hrc.org/blog/the-crisi…
/ LGBTQ asylum seekers like Cristal, Lorena and Cesar remain in fear living in Mexico as they await their U.S. court dates.
/ They are not alone. Many transgender people come to this country fleeing persecution in their home countries.

@TransEquality estimates that there are currently between 15,000 and 50,000 undocumented transgender immigrants living in the U.S. hrc.org/blog/the-preca…
/ The bigotry from this administration knows no bounds. Mark Morgan, the new head of Customs and Border Protection, said this about them: “I’ve looked at their eyes – and I’ve said that is a soon-to-be MS-13 gang member. It’s unequivocal.” politico.com/story/2019/05/…
/ Recent reports found that trans women were detained on average more than twice the average length of detainment of all immigrants held in ICE custody during fiscal year 2017.

Trans people have also consistently reported harassment, assault and maltreatment from ICE officers.
/ This month we learned about the death of Johana ‘Joa’ Medina, a 25-year-old trans woman from El Salvador who died just a short time after being released from ICE custody. Medina passed away at a hospital in Texas from severe health complications. hrc.org/blog/hrc-joins…
/ Medina’s death follows the still-unexplained death of Roxana Hernandez, who died while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after fleeing violence and discrimination in Honduras in May 2018. hrc.org/blog/hrc-calls…
/ That’s why @HRC has been working with partners across the U.S. to fight against the Trump-Pence administration’s cruel policies and to support LGBTQ immigrants and asylum seekers. hrc.org/blog/marking-i…
/ We are thankful to the advocates on the ground, including @RAICESTEXAS and @TransLawCenter, who are working to ensure that these trans women are treated with the dignity, care and respect that all immigrants and asylum seekers deserve.
/11 We are a proud nation of immigrants, and asylum seekers should be welcome here — not dehumanized by our president and left to die at our border.
