Ontario's top court has ruled that the federal carbon price law is constitutional. Canada can legislate a mandatory carbon price under the "national concern" provision of the constitution, the court says.

The court found that climate change is an "acute" concern, and that the risk of provinces refusing to fight it permits Canada to set a minimum standard to reduce emissions across the country.
Like the Saskatchewan ruling, the Ontario court has determined that the charges under the carbon pricing law are "not taxes."
