Hey @educationpalmer - as both an entrepreneur and an investor I have to say this tweet was incredibly troubling. I've never met you, or the @altschool founders, but I imagine there are a lot of people hurting right now. Might be a good time to demonstrate some empathy.
For example- how would you feel if - after one of your companies went through some struggles, an LP Tweeted out "Glad I passed on @newmarketsvp, the GPs don't know what they are doing and their portfolio isn't interesting at all."

Everyone has misses in their careers Jason. Probably not the time to gloat when others are struggling. Not sure how the @newmarketsvp team is responding to your tweet, or your other portfolio CEOs, but I personally find it pretty offensive.

Been thinking about whether ambition- particularly for non-founders - is also a double edged sword. Ambition is a wonderful trait in many respects and I have long believed (like persistence) that the more the better.
But I see more and more people reach for things that are a) outside of what would be considered stretch, b) want things at unrealistic pace.

I see the ambition to achieve the impossible too often lead to unhappiness and mental health issues.
Not really sure what to make out of it - just saying I see it.

1/ I get asked a lot : “what categories in consumer are most interesting right now?” Last week someone asked me to talk w/ a Fortune 400 CEO about which categories they should be investing into.
Here is my email response (unedited except name). Time to make friends....
2/ “I want to be transparent in our thinking. I think this is exactly the wrong question for XXXX to be asking. IF we look at the most important 100 (?) consumer companies built in the last 15 years very few were obvious categories….
3/ Examples like Chobani built the category, and examples like Halo Top helped redefine the category. There are very few 5 Hour Energy Drink companies that launched in an already obviously sexy category and still built a big business.”

Truly fantastic piece @zackkanter -thank you for putting it out.
Loved:
-similarities and differences w/ Walmart
-importance of external customers for all products
-criticism of ranking algo and ads
IMO the ads point is particularly powerful when considering consumer tastes are proliferating and the ads issue gives the power to those brands which are great at advertising (tends to be largest ones).
In an era where they should own the macro trend towards small brands, Amazon's ads are hurting themselves and the consumer. It is reversing the clock on the offline trend of moving away from slotting (slotting makes life harder for smaller brands).

December first week marks completion of 16 years of my #entrepreneurial journey. I started my business at 22 with just a degree and no actual skill or experience for business. My 2 years of job experience were of beginners level & of not much help.
Looking back I can see what a daunting task I had taken up. There were stages when I almost gave up (mostly in the 1st yr) But my stubbornness sailed me through. I would constantly remind myself not be a failure. However there are a few things I wish I knew or had learnt earlier.

So this is a lot, I apologize. But this is the story of how I met one of my teenhood icons while I was still a teenager. But there's a bit of lead up.
When I was sixteen, I discovered Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. It was about three years into it's run. And like the works of Phil Foglio and Don Rosa, it was unlike anything I'd ever seen. I was hooked instantly.
