There is only one reason Trump got elected. One reason only. It's because for many people, being "American" means looking like them, sounding like them, having a name like theirs, sharing the exact same background as theirs. And everyone else isn't welcome. Everyone else is hated
Oh, they will tell you they love "LEGAL" immigrants. They will tell you how their ancestors got here "legally" (in most cases, before there was such a thing as "illegal" immigration), they will tell you that Trump is only after those who "break the law." All of it is bullshit.
Pure, unadulterated bullshit. They don't love immigrants. They like THEIR IDEA of what a "good immigrant" should be. Namely, quiet, appreciative, humble, subservient and, above all, few and far between. This, they can tolerate. When we break out of that perception, we're a threat
As soon as there are many of us somewhere, we are "taking their country from them" and make them feel like "strangers in their own land." As soon as one of us achieves a position of power, no matter how deserved, he or she is smeared, scorned and slandered. Always.
You don't even have to be an immigrant. Look at Obama. All it took is for one of his parents to be an immigrant. All it took for him to have a "weird" name, to be something these folks can't immediately and superficially relate to. Boom! Foreigner. Usurper! Take our country back!
Look at @RashidaTlaib, born and raised in Detroit. All it takes is for her to have a "weird" name and a "bad" religion. Boom! Foreigner! Invader! Torches and pitchforks. Look at @AOC. Look at @KamalaHarris. All ostracized and smeared for being "other." Economic anxiety? Bullshit!
It's not about economics. It's not about Democrats' being "too far to the left" and "out of touch." It's not about laws. It's not about crime. It is, and always has been, about the very specific idea about what America should looks like and what Americans should be like.
In other words, it's about racism. Pure and simple. The dictionary definition of it. Nothing else. Ever.
