Some thoughts on EU top jobs:

1) Talk of "Franco-German stitch up" is always lazy & misunderstands compromise involving 27 countries. Any deal needs French & German agreement. But a FR-DE agreement alone is never enough. Opposition to Timmermans was a lot more than V4 + Italy
2) "Merkel plan falls apart" takes more often than not tend to miss what the actual plan is, and, above all, the Chancellor's ability to find compromise.

Pro tip: Merkel will almost always have a plan B, a plan C, a plan D, a plan Z.
3) On a somewhat related note, criticism of Lagarde's CV is amusing. The good old "she lacks experience" take. She's the MD of the frigging IMF.
4) SocDems unhappy with the package should look to Sanchez who preferred Borrel as HR than a SocDem as EUCO president.
5) MEPs and German SPD MPs angry at the package should be very careful what they wish for. An inability to compromise could very well lead to a mess.

But if you try sometimes you might find
You get what you need🎶
6) V4 may have shown an ability to destroy and block, but at the end of the day they achieved little. Catenaccio is so 1990s.
7) Spare a thought for Italy's Conte. Used by the V4 to torpedo Timmermans, and then left isolated. 'Nothing is lost. The return leg will be different,' he might as well say.

Italy's constant ability to align against the country's actual interests is a spectacle to behold.
8) Finally, on Macron, I agree with this:
