This is just the kind of thing that Jonathan Sumption was talking about his 3rd Reith Lecture - there isn't a huge distance between him and what Pompeo is proposing. Essentially, strip out rights which are 'controversial'. downloads.bbc.co.uk/radio4/reith20… 
Why should this be fought? Because our rights protect us from the state, the are supposed to exist above politics and constrain the worst excesses of partisanship and populism. Always beware politically slanted commissions bearing gifts

Back in 2014, this was the Tory plan which thankfully wasn't implemented because they only won the 2015 election by a small majority.
