Very interesting thread. It's good to recognize expertise in different areas & turn down the volume on over-generalized & unsupported claims in the LCHF/keto discourses. It's one thing to say, "Fruit seems to spike post-meal glucose in many of my patients with diabetes." 1/5
It's quite another thing to say, "Fruit is bred to be 100x sweeter than in the past." Patient food/BG records support the first statement. But what is the second statement based on? Seems like it probably should be true? Fruit tasted different when I was a kid? 2/5
There will always be *professional* disagreements and different interpretations/focus re: scientific literature. But even these should be *evidence-informed* disagreements/interpretations. So the rest of us reading can follow up for ourselves, maybe? 3/5
I'm all for discussion, dissension, and questioning authority (ask my mom). But let's start with understanding what we can learn from the literature & from experts (who are not themselves caught up in ideological traps--how can you tell? they say "trust me, I'm an expert"). 4/5
Experts who rely on evidence (rather than eminence) can explain why disagreements among experts exist. They *see* the other side, even if they disagree. Maybe that's a good rule of thumb for testing your favorite LCHF/keto truism? Start by *looking* for/at opposing evidence? 5/5
