I mean at some point we have to acknowledge there isn’t a coherent theory of politics underlying this, it’s just a pathological fear that anything that’s likely to be noticed by voters will inevitably make matters worse
They want to sit quietly in empty rooms and talk inscrutably about policy minutiae because they’re fearful creatures who feel safest when they’re invisible, and leading a charge against your opponents’ weaknesses, no matter how large or obvious, is the opposite of being invisible
