Part of the frustration of this cosmopolitan/nationalist debate is cosmopolitanism is equated with Wall Street -- as if the actual working class in America and many other countries wasn't polyglot & multiracial
Also: the anti-Semitic component of right-wing nationalism isn't just a matter of individual malice (although that exists) but structural necessity. If you forgo solidarity based on equality, you need an enemy to hold "the nation" together, some "cosmopolitan" foe.
All politics is based on a division between friend & foe. A left-wing populist-nationalist can make big business the foe. The right-wing nationalist can't because they accept capitalism & are often financed by wealthy, so their foe is the (cough, cough) cosmopolitan

1. Trump is not the American Mussolini, but is likely the Yankee Gabriele D'Annunzio, a prefiguration of things to come, an inchoate & incoherent forerunner of the true American Mussolini to come.
2. The danger is Trump 2.0 -- a Republican politician who, at some point down the line, takes the Trumpian formula but does it in a more competent and effective way, without Trump's personality flaws & lack of discipline.
3. One interesting thing about last week's the National Conservatism conference is that it gives us some idea of what Trump 2.0 would look like. It would be a Trump who goes in with a think tank infrastructure and policy wonks with ready-to-implement ideas on day one.

2. The most charitably explanation, offered by @ThePlumLineGS in characteristically thoughtful column, is that she's trying to preserve the 43 seats gained in 2018, which lean Republican (by +2) while the rest of the seat lean Democratic (by +16)

That's an easy one, Julie. My old neo-con friends have had the ear of the donors and the run of the best-funded conservative institutions in DC since the mid-1990s--25 years. Our nationalconservatism.org conference is dramatic proof that all this is now changing.
There were already signs of change, most obviously the closing of @BillKristol's Weekly Standard. But the National Conservatism Conference is something entirely new: It presents a positive, constructive vision of what a nationalist conservative discourse could look like.
We have 46 speakers at the conference, a broad tent embracing many perspectives. People who'll disagree, debate each other. But we're all (or almost all!) national conservatives: We're united in rejecting a dogmatic, universal liberal empire as the aim and end of "conservatism."

So this is an interesting question genuinely worth discussing, and I think it hinges entirely on what it means to "oppose Trump."
I can think of three plausible definitions for "opposing Trump."
1. Resolutely committed to destroying his political power and the effectiveness of his administration as a matter of principle. Call this partisanship or Resistance. This is certainly how some NeverTrumpers act.
2. Repeatedly bringing up Trump's weakness, faults, flaws, and shortcomings, even while explicitly or implicitly supporting many of Trump's practical initiatives, like judicial nominations. This definitely characterizes some anti-Trump conservatives too.

As we pass through, it breaks my heart to drive in South Carolina now.

This is the state I grew up in, but now it’s falling apart - literally.

The roads are a disaster, the education system is in shambles, jobs are fleeing - all a result of Republican Leadership.
There is so much potential in the Palmetto State - skilled labor, reusable natural resources, & much more. But rather than leveraging these commodities, the GOP is more concerned about preserving their confederate heritage, regulating women’s bodies, and enriching themselves.
Under the old SC Republican guard of Lindsey Graham and Henry McMaster, and a GOP-controlled legislature, South Carolina continues to dwell in the bottom of education, wages, & job growth.

It’s leaders like Steve Benjamin & Mandy Powers Norrell that can move the state forward!

...specific ways for historians to get *real* history to average Americans, how to combat racism through class & labor issues, the pain & anguish of the "psychic death" of rural whites, & adapting a federal jobs program to the state level...
