1. Trump is not the American Mussolini, but is likely the Yankee Gabriele D'Annunzio, a prefiguration of things to come, an inchoate & incoherent forerunner of the true American Mussolini to come.
2. The danger is Trump 2.0 -- a Republican politician who, at some point down the line, takes the Trumpian formula but does it in a more competent and effective way, without Trump's personality flaws & lack of discipline.
3. One interesting thing about last week's the National Conservatism conference is that it gives us some idea of what Trump 2.0 would look like. It would be a Trump who goes in with a think tank infrastructure and policy wonks with ready-to-implement ideas on day one.
4. There are various possibilities for Trump 2.0 -- Tucker Carlson, Tom Cotton. In the National Conservatism conference, I thought Missouri Senator Josh Hawley made a credible bid for the role: he's young, smart, policy savvy.
