It’s amazing that the new never-Trump take is that the Republican Party hadn’t been sowing the seeds of racism, sexism, nationalism, etc. for a long time before Trump, but rather that they were just being wrongly attacked by the left as doing so.
After the last week, it’s all about triage for these folks: How does the Republican Party recover after Trump? And, if they take any blame, they’ll actually have to rethink things. Instead, it’s far easier to blame the left and say Trump was a knee-jerk, extreme response to them.
And this isn’t just this thread. We’ve seen versions of this throughout the past week. The discussion about past presidential nominees, for example. It’s all an attempt to blame those seeking to correct course and address racism long before we got to Trump ... for Trump.
