I’ve updated my analysis of inequalities in health and life expectancy data to use the most recent ONS data.

The most deprived group of men live 9 fewer years compared to the least deprived group. What’s more, despite living less long they spend 9 more years in poor health. 1/5
Women’s live expectancy exceeds men’s at all levels of deprivation, by around 3yrs, but healthy LE is similar.

The most deprived group of women live 7 1/2 fewer years compared to the least deprived group. Despite living less long they spend 11 more years in poor health. 2/5
Next, how the picture has changed between 2012-14 and the most recent data.

Life expectancy for men is increasing at most ages and at most levels of deprivation. Younger men in the least deprived groups made the largest gains. So LE inequality is increasing. 3/5
The picture for women looks rather bleak. Although life expectancy has slightly increased overall, it has fallen or stayed level for the oldest groups at all levels of deprivation. Gains have only been made by the younger and least deprived groups. 4/5
Charts use latest ONS health state life expectancy data published in March 2019. 3yr averages are used to reduce statistical noise.

English population split into 10 equal sized groups using the index of multiple deprivation, explained here: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl… 5/5
