While I am happy to see #WhitePeopleAgainstRacism trending, but I would be happier if white people were really against racism. But are we?
After all, we don't seem terribly concerned that Black maternal mortality is multiples of white maternal mortality. We seem perfectly sanguine about incarcerating Black people for lack of bail and a host of "while Black" crimes like vagrancy, trespass, etc.
Our response to the crack epidemic was "lock them up" while our response to the opioid and meth epidemics is more compassionate, seeking to reduce sentences, to favor treatment. This is a better response to addiction, but why did wisdom only come when whites were most affected?
Names perceived as ethnic (only Black & Brown ethnicities) are more often rejected by potential landlords and employers. No one seems to demand that end.
Our response to Black activists demanding that Black Lives Matter was to cry bigotry and shout back that All Lives Matter, as though police murdered unarmed white people with the same impunity
Worse, we embrace the deeply offensive "Blue Lives Matter" slogan to declare our solidarity with police who murder unarmed Black men with impunity. We refuse to demand accountability or to demand reforms of Use of Force.
We can have #WhitePeopleAgainstRacism when it is clear cut, such as KKK, burned crosses, and the n-word, but when it's about school funding, voter suppression, reparations, sadly we revert to #WhitePeopleLoveWhiteSupremacy so long as we can still claim to have a Black friend
I think it is easier to get #WhitePeopleAgainstRacism than #WhitePeopleAgainstWhiteSupremacy because it is easy to denounce the really gross offenders who use say the words out loud but hard to give up the privileges of systemic oppression
