There and interesting phenomenon I noticed with social media bias that results in damage to individual speech on the right but to collective image problems on the left

Thread 1/x
Starting with Antifa v Proud Boys we get a sense of the bias

Two groups for whatever reason fighting in the streets.

Big Tech purged PBs and not Antifa

2/x
There are other examples like this but we will start here

By only banning PB's and Gavin McGinnes they have harmed the individual expression of those people but effectively 'cleaned up' the right's image in the long run

Meanwhile Antifa continues to advocate for terror

3/x
Gavin McInnes gets banned and thus is no longer seen in right wing discourse on Twitter

Shaun King called for terrorism, then once it happened praised the terrorist

Shaun King is still on twitter

In fact he has more than 3x the followers Gavin ever did

4/x
Jessica Yaniv insulted Lindsay Shepherd over her body and was not banned, Lindsay responded in kind and was banned (lindsay was since reinstated)

But think about the long term affects of this kind of bias

5/x
If Twitter and Facebook tend to ban right wing figures then the only people left will be clean cut, suit wearing professionals presenting cogent points about policy.

Twitter is in effect cleaning up the right's image and doing a favor for them collectively

6/x
An outsider will see crazy purple haired, half shaven head, mask wearing individuals calling for violence, socialism and revolution.

They will also see a republican in a suit being calm and rational

7/x
Of course its not absolute, just a tendency that results in this circumstance

But there is another peripheral affect allowing the left to say insane things will have on the left

8/x
By allowing the crazies on the left, Shaun King calling for terrorism being a good example, others see the success of the viral posts and respond in kind.

Twitter takes little to no action which makes people view it as acceptable

9/x
You end up with this

"A recent poll by a leading centrist think tank found that less than three in 10 Democratic primary voters support abolishing ICE. But 64% of those who tweet at least once a day do."

10/x
Its often hard to deal with and reel in the craziest in your faction. What do you do if your faction has overt racists damaging your image and chance to win over moderates? They have free speech

Fortunately for the right these people are removed from social media

11/x
But what about the left? Calling for violence, saying "by any means necessary" posting years of anti white racist content

Its all there influencing the left and making them look insane

12/x
I once tried to convince someone in the UK that an alt right individual was using racial slurs but they didn't believe me

When I searched google for evidence the video was nowhere to be found, but at the bottom it said they had removed certain search results

13/x
I'm not sure if thats why I couldnt find it but think about other examples

Anti-racist researchers getting banned on twitter for posting proof white supremacists committed a crime, or journalists like @FordFischer getting videos removed

14/x
These companies are trying to protect their bottom line by removing any reference to objectionable content but for whatever reason the media does not care about far left terror so it doesnt get removed (for the most part)

15/x
The media barely covered the story of a man with an AR15 and fire bombs attacking a federal facility and getting killed

Or a man showing up to a school with a concealed handgun and getting shot in the head

16/x
So brands ignore it, media doesnt ban the calls for violence

But media will target a right winger over any thing

Daily Beast goes on endlessly about Proud Boys going to someones house but where is the endless coverage of Antifa street violence and terror?

17/x
In the end

The left is ignored and festers online

Shaun King spreads conspiracies, calls for violence, and praises terrorists but keeps his job at the Intercept and his twitter account.

People can see it and its makes the left look psychotic from the outside

18/x
Regular people in this country probably are not very active on Twitter so there are two potential outcomes I see being predominant

Moderates won't see the crazy either way

OR

Moderates, who do get news from conservative outlets, will see the insanity reported on

19/x
If two kids are slobs but one isnt allowed to have ice cream

An outsider will see one kid covered in a chocolate mess while the other will look clean and proper

Its not that one is cleaner, just not allowed to eat ice cream and thus stays clean
