The Trump admin & the press have been calling the deal signed btw the US and Guatemala a "Safe Third Country" agreement.

It's not.

Neither government has released the text of the agreement.

A leaked version of the document does NOT say that the deported person must have previously been present in Guatemala to be transferred there.
This makes the deal seem more like the "arrangements made by Australia to transfer asylum seekers to the impoverished island nation of Nauru, than it does sound anything like the relatively equal relationship between Safe Third Country partners."
Now updated with a link to the unofficial English-language version of the agreement.

The “safe third country” agreement would require migrants, including Salvadorans and Hondurans, who cross into Guatemala on their way to the US to apply for protections in that country instead of at the southern border.
It could potentially ease the crush of migrants overwhelming the immigration system and hand Trump a victory as he works to fulfill his campaign promises to curb illegal entry.

Following AG Barr’s decision to unilaterally disallow bail hearings for any asylum seekers, many folks admitted they do not grok the difference between immigration courts and our real justice system.

Information is the devil's mistress, so let's do this!
First, there is a difference between immigration courts and our actual real justice system. The justice system that everyone generally thinks of, with local county courthouses, district, circuit courts, all the way up to SCOTUS: that's a whole branch of government unto itself.

They're under the aegis of the Executive Branch, specifically part of the Department of Justice, and the AG is the Boss. ICs used to be part of INS, but a few years back, they were moved to DoJ in a hope for more impartiality.

Context: @mike_giglio had an excellent piece last month on how the #Trump admin may be executing a strategy of "maximum pressure" against #Iran, partly inspired by the book "Victory" & its claim that Reagan used this strategy to defeat the Soviet Union. 2/ buzzfeednews.com/article/mikegi…
There's only one problem: "Victory" is not good history, to put it politely. The most basic critique is that the author didn't have access to US & Soviet archives when the book was published in 1994. You can find much harsher academic critiques online. 3/ amazon.com/dp/0871136333/…
