Always best to confess when you get things wrong. I had assumed - it was all left rather vague - that Cairns was talking about a market opening created by the EU/Japan FTA. Which the U.K. hasn’t so far got Japan to agree to retain for the U.K on a no deal.
But the BBC Fact Checker has looked at this: turns out that Cairns was referring to a lifting of a Japanese block on imports of U.K. lamb. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi…
But - as @bbcnickrobinson rightly pointed out (and at least I acknowledged that it was a perfectly good line of attack) - it’s not exactly plausible that this opportunity could replace the EU market in 12 weeks.
Not least because (as others have observed) lamb is not a popular meat in Japan.
