Today I’ll be at the Neshoba County Fair in Philadelphia, Mississippi—the town where klansmen murdered 3 civil rights workers in 1964 and where Ronald Reagan gave his 1st speech as the GOP nominee in 1980, dog whistling his support for “state’s rights.” ( 📸 by me, 2018) 1/
I’ll be covering candidates for statewide and district level offices at the Neshoba County Fair political speaking today. Candidates are those for public service, transportation, ag & commerce commissions; lieutenant governor; & secretary of state. #MSelex 2/
Tomorrow’s candidates include those for governor, treasurer, and attorney general. Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn will also speak. 3/

In 1990, the @latimes tried to understand Klansman David Duke winning 43% in Louisiana’s US Senate race:

“There‘s a tremendous amount of anger & frustration among working-class whites. ... These people feel left out; they feel gov’t is not responsive to them,” a researcher said.
That isn’t the only familiar quote from 1990 that @AdamSerwer dig up in this story.

The @washingtonpost explained that Louisiana had “a large working class that has suffered through a long recession.”

In 1990, Donald Trump explained Klansman David Duke winning 43% in Louisiana’s US Senate race this way:

“It’s anger. I mean, that’s an anger vote. People are angry about what’s happened. People are angry about the jobs. If you look at Louisiana, they’re really in deep trouble.”

Mississippi Secretary of State candidate @SamBrittonMS (R) is running a Trump-Trump-Trump campaign. He’s highlighting the fact that he was one of the first Mississippi officials to endorse Trump, while attacking opponent @MichaelWatson22 as a #NeverTrump candidate. #mselex #MSsos
Important to note: In Mississippi, the secretary of state is not responsible for fluffing Trump’s ego.

The job entails things like training poll-workers (not controlling the voting process); overseeing campaign finance and lobbying issues; dealing w things like voter ID, et al.
Britton isn’t the only MS pol to make Trump the center of his campaign: In 2018, Sen. @cindyhydesmith’s core campaign message was that she voted with Trump 100% of the time.

@TateReeves has similarly emphasized his love of Trump in his #MSGov run.

No, in that very interview, Lee Atwater says quite clearly that there *used* to be a racist southern strategy in the 1960s but then claims they didn't use it in the 1980 campaign.

Hunter Gray, a Civil Rights leader in JXN, MS, in the early 1960s, died earlier this week. He is most famously known for taking part in the 1963 Woolworth sit-in in JXN, which yielded this iconic photo. Gray is sitting at the counter, on the left. #Mississippi #NonViolence
In 2015 Gray wrote an account of the day for the @guardian: "That’s me in the picture. . . . They cut my face with sharp brass knuckles; someone cut the back of my head with the jagged edge of a broken sugar container. There was a good deal of blood." theguardian.com/artanddesign/2…
The picture of course went instantly everywhere. “Friends across the country called to say they had seen it, and we got letters from people all over the world.”

The image’s ongoing value, said Gray, was in reinforcing the idea that “change comes” from “grass roots people.”

My parents were Socialists.
They grew up dirt poor.
They believed in creating change in their lifetimes.
They raised us to believe the same.
When we were small, they were Civil Rights workers.
My dad was a Freedom Rider.

Our early childhood was framed within & by the #CRM.
My mother wasn't well, but she did everything she knew how, to ensure that black Americans had the right to vote, a right she cherished because her mother had been a baby #suffragist and had fought for that right for women.

The fallout for my parents was minor compared to their black friends, but it was violent and hate-strewn and they worried about their children being hurt.

And we were hurt. I got beaten up a lot because then as now I refused silence. I got in a lot of fist fights.

1. When the actions of our government spark mass protest it is a sign that the democratic process is unwell - that the government is operating well-outside the mainstream. Historically, the reasons differ.
2. Usually, it is because the government is resisting change that is wanted by the majority of the country - as with the Suffrage and Civil Rights movements. It can also be due to a disagreement of the majority with policy - as with the Vietnam War.
3. The mass protests witnessed since 2016 are a bit different. We have seen a majority party not just resisting progress, but wishing to dial it back - fully aware it is against the wishes of the majority of the population.

I'm one of a few million Americans awake when we should be sleeping because of the pain of #cancer or some other chronic illness.

Adding to our sleeplessness is knowing #healthcare is under threat. We may not be able to afford it due to the #GOP's actions.

It's terrorizing.
My parents were Civil Rights workers. My father was a Freedom Rider. As a small child I was taught the legacy of #MLK.
I watched people invoking MLK on Monday. Not in defense of #votingrights or in outrage over how the #SCOTUS ruled on two pivotal cases on gerrymandering.

MLK wasn't being invoked for #votingrights but for Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who lies to America every day about policies that could very well kill me & others.

Policies that are hurting millions.

Policies that have kept me a citizen without equal rights in my own country.
