Here is my bitcoin/crypt thread:
An analogy first: I know a bunch of ppl (mostly youngish tech ppl) who think that the best solution to climate change is.....Mars!
Like actually colonizing and living on a planet that has yet to sustain like any human (or other recognizable) life. Like build spaceships and build communities and transport people and eat there and did I mention breathe too?
They think that option (call it the tech option) is much better and easier than the fix earth option, which involves lots of accords and coordination with countries and taxing corporations and cleaning up our mess (call it the democracy option).
The democracy option seems totally unfeasible. I mean congress is corrupt and the Trump admin is incompetent and how would we get China on board? And Iran? And cleaning up oceans and plastic straws. It's tiring and hard work and impossible.
So that's hard--let's colonize a whole new planet.
Back to bitcoin. Our banking system is a total mess. Corruption, greed, our congress is bought by lobbyists and private equity is ruining things, and unbanked populations, etc. It's a mess.
The democracy option is to fix it--make the fed a publicly accountable organization, regulate banks to actually serve people, root out corruption from politics. Super hard to do
The Tech option is to literally create an entire new currency system from scratch and wait for wholesale adoption across the world.
So it may be wishful thinking that we can clean up our actual institutions and actual earth. But to think about colonizing Mars and a new currency is the craziest kind of utopian thinking.
It's so utopian that it is incredibly cynical and nihilistic. I do think that it's mostly based on good intentions of wanting to make the world a better place (or I guess, Mars). But why not do the hard work of holding the Fed and the EPA accountable.
