Very grateful for the positive reaction to this Irish backstop explainer. There were of course criticisms - Northern Ireland is not contested but fully part of the UK, London has no basis for a claim, why do we need border checks anyway - mostly from anonymous accounts...
A few comments along the lines of "why shouldn't the EU compromise more?" - for which I think it worth pointing out how unique but also fragile is the EU Single Market. Many countries e.g. US, Canada have different rules in the same country, it is hard to create a single market
Ironically of course it was the UK who provided much of the vision to create and deepen the single market, and those involved would understand that such a single market needs protective borders. The Conservative Party in particular rebelled at their own creation...
