This strategy could massively backfire on Cummings. He is saying that if MPs vote against the govt on a confidence motion in early Setptember Johnson will just schedule an election for after October 31st. Such a long campaign would be virtually unprecedented but in any case...
But in laying down the gauntlet like this, Cummings is either inviting MPs to find ever more inventive legislative vehicles to prevent it (with Speaker’s assistance) and/or effectively saying only way of stopping it is installing new PM during 14 day FTPA cooling off period.
Then BJ has to go into election as Tory leader but not PM. A fair old risk.
If it keeps going like this the thing which will kill this administration will be hubris.
