Fat girl thread. CW: dieting

Sometimes I don’t realize I’m hungry until I’m already pretty in need of food. I tend to go from “I could eat” to “If I don’t eat something right now I will stab you” in less than ten minutes. Today I realized one reason why I’m like this.
I spent most of my teens and twenties with an eating disorder, going from fad diet to fad diet, with diet pills, starvation & excessive exercise thrown in. I spent years teaching myself to IGNORE the signs of hunger, to turn it into white noise.
Now, when I want to treat my body with kindness, I am re-learning how to recognize signs of hunger, to listen to my body, in a way that dieting habits have discouraged in me.
Years of engagement with the diet industry warped not only my perception of my body size, but also my awareness of my bodily needs. Now, as a person recovering/recovered from an eating disorder, l’m re-learning how to know when my body is hungry before it feels like an emergency.
It’s amazing to me how often I am finding bodyminds habits & ways of being in my life that were built entirely around/as a response to fatphobia, sexism, & other oppressions.
It’s amazing how much work it takes to re-learn body acceptance in a world that tells me my bodymind deserves nothing but punishment & shame. Keep living, keep learning, keep loving toward liberation, friends.
