Easy to overlook this detail in the NYT story about the demise of the Warroad Pioneer: when they actually had a piece of big, important local news, they softpedalled it so as not to ruffle feathers in town. nytimes.com/2019/08/01/us/…
"If you want to read the details of what happened, you can read it in the [big regional outlet several hours away]." That's a shocking statement for any editor to make about a story in their own town.
People talk about the importance of local papers in providing watchdog and accountability journalism, but a lot of these small local outlets gave up on that years ago.
Shutting the printing presses down is just a formality. Journalism has been dead in a lot of these places for a long time already.
