the people who voted for civil rights were essentially. liberals, including the ones in the GOP, along with Northern Dems. People you would say were RINOs today...
You cannot name any movement conservatives who supported the civil rights movement. The National Review opposed it (Buckley) and said blacks bombed their own churches to discredit segregationist whites...
And please, before you say, Charlton Heston, let's recall he was a liberal in those days (active union supporter among other things)...the movement was, top to bottom, on the left...
keep in mind, parties have changed quite a bit. In 1956 the GOP platform was pro-union, pro-expansion of social security, pro-government intervention in housing markets, and even pro-Equal Rights Amendment...so, yeah...
