Breaking: Johnson confirms to Commons that he will break the law. All those Cabinet ministers who were just wheeled out to say PM will respect the law? He lied to you. This is a coup.
It is hard to overstate just how serious this is. The Benn bill gained royal assent today and became an Act of Parliament. The prime minister then stood in Commons and said, without any doubt, that he would defy that law. This is the gravest constitutional outrage in 300 years.
I look forward to hearing from the Justice Secretary, from Attorney General, from Northern Ireland Secretary, from Nicky Morgan, how they can now remain in a government that has just announced it does not subscribe to the rule of law.
All Johnson had to say was ‘I will get a deal, there will be no reason to delay’. He could have sidestepped it and said ‘I subscribe to the rule of law and will follow law’. He did not. He said he would not delay. No ifs, no buts. Now we will see how democratic Britain really is.
If Johnson breaks the law, he kills the Tory party. Let that party go, if necessary. Our democracy is more important, and that must be saved.
