Joe Biden still hasn't explicitly endorsed impeachment, if you were wondering.
A lot of folks in my mentions saying Biden can't endorse impeachment because he was a target of Trump's malfeasance, but I don't see it. He's not a senator—recusal isn't an issue here. If he thinks what Trump is known to have done is an impeachable offense, he should say so.
I guess my question is: What is the principle that precludes Biden from taking a stand on whether Trump's misdeeds are worthy of impeachment? Because I can't identify one.
To put it another way: If Trump abuses the power of his office in an attempt to steal the general election, we would hope that the Democratic nominee would condemn such acts as constitutional violations, right? So how is this different?
The closest I can come to an answer—and as I mull, I think this may actually be THE answer—is that because he didn't call for impeachment when it wasn't about him, it'd look weird now if he called for impeachment when it IS about him.
He clearly doesn't want to sideline himself—he did release the statement at the top of the thread, after all—but if he's not willing to say "impeach" and he's not willing to make an implicit impeachment case (because then why not say impeach), then he's kind of in a box.
At some point—and I think that moment is gonna need to be pretty soon—he's going to have to come out for impeachment. But yeah, he's kind of in a box.
