At some point we need to move beyond this unnuanced take on critique. The people who want to resist criticism will always hide beyond "other people do it too". It's lazy. Just like people who insist that all forms of violence are equivalent. All of this requires judgment.
I'm not gonna say too much, because I don't plan to see Joker in theaters. But even without seeing it, it's seems clear that Joker has a different commentary on violence and where it comes from than John Wick does.
It is never the violence itself that is at issue. We know that violence is a reality of the world we live in. People aren't naive. We make moral judgments about different kinds of violence every day. You couldn't make a movie about plane crashes for years after 9/11.
