The German government unveiled a major policy package to combat #climate change. The subsequent discussion in the German media shows the huge political and economic cost of a simple-minded focus on #carbon pricing – it’s the 1980s all over again! A Thread @BMF_Bund @JWMason1
The policy package contains a mix of mainly sensible measures: A slowly increasing carbon price, public investment (public trains), subsidies for switching to green technology, transfers to compensate “losers”, and a plan to move out of coal energy.
What happened in the subsequent media discussion is very interesting. As expected, there was critique of certain transfers and subsidies that some groups did not like (“waste of money”). Also, the opposition parties were critical – no surprise here.

First, note that that "remove two-thirds..." statement is "over 50 to 100 years."
So... Your ten year old granddaughter would be 110, and the other third of New carbon *as of today* would still be there...
2. But more to the point... "research shows..."
Um. We have known for a long time, like longer than I've been alive, that (a) photosynthesis is the only thing that has ever removed any significant amount of CO2 from the atmosphere, and (b) that living things are made of carbon.
3. This is like, we need a credentialed scientist and a published paper to tell us when to go to the bathroom.
I learned this is grade school.
I started grade school in 1952.
Somebody tell me about our knowledge society, quick, I've forgotten.

1) The options available to the court are not as simple as "yes Ottawa can tax carbon emissions" or "no, Ottawa can't tax carbon". There are a bunch of combinations possible along a number of parameters:
a) "Industrial" price on reported emissions of large emitters vs. "consumer" point-of-sale price on fuels;
b) which head of power each of these can come under: POGG national concern vs. criminal vs. tax;

As I replied to @EricHolthaus- I'm aware of and inspired by @givingwhatwecan & @GiveWell work on global health/poverty; I personally want to support climate mitigation. I realize there's no one right answer, depends on theory of change etc; curious to hear different perspectives.
Esp. in climate arena where impact could be on different possible levels (eg X tons avoided from cookstoves vs Y tons #fossil CO2 kept in the ground vs systemic political or economic change)- curious to hear diverse range of theory of change or evidence of effectiveness.
