Breaking: Boris Johnson lays out grand compromise over Ireland in bid to crack 11th hour Brexit deal:
* Northern Ireland follows Brussels rules on goods as well as food and livestock
* the people of NI must consent to it within nine months by June 2020

The win for the UK is an independent UK-wide customs system so it can its do its own trade deals. Customs on the Irish border enforced by electronic paper trails and stand off checks. No new physical infrastructure needed anywhere 2/
Will it work? Dublin's agreement is all. Govt sources say discreet conversations with senior Irish politicians over the summer suggested they would bite, even on customs - but their calculations changed after the Benn Act was passed, and they're now retreating 3/
But the DUP do seem onside, and read PM's letter to Jean-Claude Juncker last night. Won over by the consent offer, and a massive new cash bung (of potentially billions) to be agreed, being called a 'New Deal for Northern Ireland' 4/

I have spoken to three different Cabinet ministers, who are all preparing to confront PM after Tory conference next week. They will insist he accepts an 11th hour compromise offer instead that they expect EU to make. 2/
They will also demand he abandons Dominic Cummings’ “aggressive” strategy to bluff out the EU with the threat of No Deal. One of the Cabinet ministers: “The PM has to take what he can get now. The Cummings plan has clearly failed. We can’t fight battles on so many fronts”. 3/

Quite a speech just given by a sleep-deprived Boris Johnson to the UN about AI. Warned about “terrifying limbless chickens” and compared Breixt to Prometheus having “his liver pecked out daily by an eagle. It went on forever”. Ambassadors’ reaction was something to behold.
Then the PM went on to talk about London, where he said “it doesn’t rain 94% of the time”. He also accused the French of reclaiming the title of having more Michelin starred restaurants in a way “that seemed to me not entirely fair”. France’s ambassador was not at all amused.

Boris Johnson's speech in Rotherham interrupted by heckler: "Why aren't you with our MPs in Parliament Boris, sorting out your mess?" PM replies: “I’m very happy to get back to Parliament very soon”.
Ouch. BBC Breakfast presenter and conference compere Steph McGovern sticks one on the PM after he leaves the stage: “I'd just like to point out, I am a girly swot and I’m proud of it. Let’s see who’s in the job the longest”.
Worth noting No10 didn't invite the national press to listen to the PM's speech in Rotherham today, possibly because of the horlicks he made of the police cadets speech last week.

- kick the other (customs VAT etc) into transition/trade talks. /2
Negotiability with EU?

- practically zero. Would require massive EU u-turn on 'fully open' border in Ireland, Single market integrity. And to throw Ireland under bus politically.

- A border is a border, even if set back. Tech/exemptions cannot deliver.

1) Why does no-one talk about the EU trade defecit or German car makers any more?

The £350m & the lies on immigration were important but an absolute consistent #Brexit tag line was "they need us more than we need them"

*that* was the Brexit on offer, a desperate, pliant EU
2) the sequence of events is very simple yet never picked up by our media who cannot look back more than 48 hours:

- Brexiters told us the German car makers because of our huge trade defecit would be desperate for a trade deal
- "its in their interest, they have more to lose"
3) - Gove, Johnson, Davis, Grayling, Farage, all of them said we were guaranteed a better #Brexit deal than we have now

Some of them might even have believed it.

- we wouldn't need to be *in* the Single Market because we would have full *access* to it, at no cost to the UK

1) Get ready for a big #Brexit week this week - in Brussels and U.K.
2) European Commission decides today whether or not to delay 2 awaited publications scheduled for Wednesday appearance: paper on future EU-UK relationship and paper on stark EU intentions in case of no deal
3) These 2 papers could be used as carrot/sticks in negotiations but there’s a nervousness in EU circles to get tone right at this delicate coming-to-end-game state of #Brexit proceedings and not to be seen as bullying (remember Salzburg??)
