— if Brussels refuses to negotiate on Northern Ireland customs, No10 will say the EU is "crazy" and has made a deal "impossible"

People at the top of government astonished at Baroness Hale today

Govt source: "The independence of the judiciary and their slideshow choices is not something we can question."

Second govt source: "This shows a clear lack of judgment. Remind me what her job title is again?"

Third govt source gets in touch: “You wouldn't get Supreme Court Justices in the US publicly bragging about defeating the executive and mocking the President. But apparently our system is above board and theirs is somehow something to be feared.”

UK willing to discuss compromise

But they insist it is a serious offer kicking off 10 days of talks to decide whether a deal can be done

Taking a step back at the moment, after today it is hard to see how Boris Johnson can still legitimately claim to have "just the right amount of time" to agree _and_ ratify a #Brexit deal before October 31.

Here is a short thread looking at the timeline:

The first draft of the original Withdrawal Agreement was published on 28 February 2018.

The draft was finalised on 24 November 2018, after month of careful negotiations on the text.

The UK has not put forward alternative proposals for Northern Ireland yet. /2
In November 2018, the UK government lobbied the other EU27 countries for a special #EUCO to adopt the withdrawal agreement.

Main argument was that it could not wait until the December European Council, as the UK would need 4 month to get the WA through the Commons. /3

@chrisinsilico Why the overspending? Dominic Cummings has admitted Vote Leave used AIQ to place 1.5 billion ads like these on individual Facebook feeds in the days before the referendum. All completely under the radar of the regulator.

1. I cannot contain my loathing of Jacob Rees-Mogg, Boris Johnson and John Redwood et al. They are wreckers and liars manipulating the stupid and the easily led.

#Brexit thread.
2. When you've been in a political and economic union for forty years things get a bit complicated. There is layer upon layer of complexity and no one person understands it all and never will. It's massive and anyone claiming to understand it fully is lying or overconfident.
3. For instance, the aviation sector covers everything from landing slots to safety certification where often it is difficult to tell what is an EU competence and ans where the line of delineation is between the EU and the nation state.
