Bet you didn’t think we’d still be here in October 2019 for the fourth budget of Confidence & Supply, says FF’s Michael McGrath - “the process is far less advanced now” than for the previous three
McGrath says there is “some scope” for tax cuts, which seems to go against what he had said previously if the budget was being designed for a no-deal scenario
McGrath: Govt hasn’t yet presented its social protection proposals, but “nothing is off the table” regarding rates - music to Willie O’Dea’s ears
Oh... McGrath says there is actually much less than the advertised €700m to play with, and specifically mentions health as presenting acute challenges - suggests the 2019 health overspend has taken a giant chunk out of the free cash for 2020

Taoiseach tells the Dáil he hasn’t seen the “non papers” which formed the basis of last night’s report on the possibility of ‘customs clearance zones’ - but he “very much welcomes” Boris Johnson’s disowning of the proposals, otherwise they would be acting “in very bad faith”
Varadkar: “I would ask anyone in the British government who thinks this is in any way a good idea to listen to the people of Northern Ireland... no British government should try to impose a solution upon Ireland which is opposed by the people of Ireland, north and south”
Varadkar keen to stress that Ireland only ever envisages checks in a no-deal scenario (whereas Johnson seems to envisage them being involved in a deal)

🚨 BREAKING: Leo Varadkar tonight concedes that in a no-deal, “some” of the checks needed on goods and live animals “will take place near the border” - though “as far as possible, they will take place in ports, airports and at businesses”
Varadkar: UK hasn’t proposed viable alternatives to supersede backstop: “We are open to alternatives, as we always have been. But they must be realistic ones, legally binding and workable in practice. We have received no such proposals to date.”
More: “We don’t wish to see a no-deal Brexit and we will continue our efforts to avoid one, but not at any cost. Unlike some, I see no upsides to No Deal. I do fear it. But I am prepared for it.”

The initial project, option & prospect of #Brexit came with huge opportunity costs, which were too easily pre-discounted as #ProjectFear. 1/
The initial #Leave case, dramatised by the #BorisBus, contended that UK could save its £350m pw #EU 'gross membership contribution' and pass that 'saving' straight to the #NHS - as 'additional funding'. 2/
The #Leave case focused on saving UK's #EU gross membership cost in favour of #NHS.

It ignored regular #EU annual contributions back into a multiplicity of UK projects, which would obviously be stopped, if we ceased membership.

Remember: now harder to win asylum under AG Sessions. And 1,000 reunited families are slated for deportation.

Maria Gloria came to the U.S. with her 11 and 7 year old boys from Honduras to escape death threats.

They were separated for a month and a half, now finally reunited.
