A little assistance for the currently niche "how long will the Brexit extension be" discussion... still think three months might be too little, nine months evidently the limit, will stick to my five months to March 2020 guess.
The usual excellent Saturday morning @tconnellyRTE Brexit missive. Talks are going nowhere but in neither side's interests to say so. Pedantically though I wouldn't describe customs as the binary issue, rather the nature of a guarantee or not...
@tconnellyRTE Maybe, just maybe, you could jointly work on an Ireland customs solution with the UK outside a CU - but given this will likely take years there needs to be some guarantee to Ireland and the EU that a border won't be established, but also to the UK that progress will be made.
@tconnellyRTE Unfortunately the siren voices in the Conservative Party are that borders particularly in Ireland are an invented problem, and if they aren't, alternative arrangements can solve them yesterday. UK Government plans lean on the latter plus mass surveillance = not acceptable.
@tconnellyRTE Anyway, just in case anyone is interested in how you'd actually get a Brexit / Ireland solution. Mostly there's a greater preference for chasing unicorns, blaming EU intransigence when you don't find them, and no-dealers and remainers agreeing these are the only two solutions
@tconnellyRTE You can't solve a complex political and technical problem like Ireland and Brexit if a majority of those involved don't want it to be solved.
