Are companies secretly eavesdropping on smartphone users to inform ads? There's no evidence, but.

Conference paper on the 'feasibility and detectability of mobile eavesdropping'. The most comprehensive take on the question I know of: link.springer.com/chapter/10.100…
"Besides the widespread attribution to chance, one alternative approach to explaining strangely accurate advertisements points to all the established tracking technologies commonly employed by advertisers that do not depend on any phone sensors or microphones"

Indeed.
Btw. Please don't blame the users if they feel like their phone is secretly listening to them.

Companies monitor, track and follow people in virtually every aspect of their lives today. This is 1) nearly impossible to understand even for experts and 2) simply shouldn't happen.
