Donald Trump’s incompetence has fatal consequences. Trump’s indefensible choice to greenlight Turkey’s invasion of northern Syria endangered U.S. forces on the ground, betrayed our Kurdish partners in Syria and strengthened ISIS.
History will reveal whether Donald Trump failed to respect our military leaders, our alliances and our honor because he is compromised, utterly corrupt or simply incompetent (or all of the above).
However, what is immediately clear is that Donald Trump’s actions only served to advance the interests of Putin, Assad, Iran and ISIS – and now witnessing the chaos, Trump feels no regret and he has not learned a single solemn lesson from his failures.

My heart breaks for the 22 people who lost their lives in #ElPaso on Saturday and for the 9 killed in #Dayton just hours later. It breaks for the hundreds who’ve lost their lives to senseless gun violence in Chicago, including this past weekend—the deadliest weekend in 2019 yet.
It’s past time we honor the lives of those lost not just with moments of silence, but with action.

Actions that strengthen our background check system and keeps weapons of war off of our streets and out of the hands of those who have no business possessing them.
But the cold, hard truth is that as long as the Senate is controlled by Mitch McConnell—and as long as @senatemajldr refuses to allow us to vote—he can block commonsense reforms.

This isn’t about courage, it’s about values.

It isn’t about will, it’s about votes.

It may surprise a lot of people but not all servicemembers who risk their lives + limbs to protect us are citizens of this great nation. Some are immigrants who came to this country seeking a better life + volunteered for service, even if it meant putting themselves in danger. 1/
Tragically, according to a new report, more than 90 Veterans have been deported over the past 5 yrs. Some of them – who wore our uniform + swore to protect us – were never offered citizenship like the law requires. That’s absolutely unacceptable. wbez.org/shows/wbez-new… 2/
.@mizamudio talked to some of these Veterans who now live in Mexico, including Miguel Perez, a Chicagoan who the Trump Admin deported. Miguel lives a few miles from the US border + suffers from service-connected PTSD, but he’s barred from accessing the VA benefits he’s earned. 3/

Now, you're stealing billions from @DeptofDefense's budget to fund a wall you promised Mexico would pay for. You're failing to support military families by taking away caregiver funding. You're kicking out Americans who *are* willing to serve only because they're transgender. 2/
Sane people aren't "fans" of war—only #StableGeniuses would even think that. I’ve met many #WWII #DDay Vets. None ever said they were fans of war. They simply answered their nation’s call, regardless of what they thought. Especially during the draft—it wasn’t optional for them 3/

The United States forces, having defeated the ISIS territorial "Caliphate," will no longer be in the immediate area.

The United States Government has pressed France 🇫🇷, Germany 🇩🇪, and other European nations 🇪🇺, from which many captured ISIS fighters came, to take them back, but

It’s extraordinary just how much BS gets created in people’s minds.

I never once expressed “support” for #Turkey’s #Afrin operation.

- Did I say it was inevitable? Yes.
- Did I observe it & comment on its advance vis-a-vis broader #Syria dynamics (i.e. my job)? Yes.
My critique has always been about the imbalance/s created in northern #Syria by U.S. counter-#ISIS policy.

The #YPG was/is the #PKK - all U.S. officials admit that in private. That didn’t necessarily have to preclude working with them, but ignoring it caused big, big problems.
#pt: As an analyst of terrorist groups, I did see a certain irony & short-sightedness in the words of one top, serving U.S. official, “allying with a terrorist group (#PKK) to fight another terrorist group (#ISIS).”

It’s got nothing to do with any position on #Kurds, whatsoever.
