Fighting in Syria resumed despite a BS "ceasefire" that Trumps regime took credit for. It was never a ceasefire. Just an agreement to displace Kurds, who are losing everything, without attacking them for 5 days until Erdogan meets with Putin on Tuesday

Turkey is ethnically cleansing Kurds under this alleged "ceasefire." Turkish foreign minister disputed Pences version by calling it a pause/ emphasizing that Turkish military is not leaving. Trump meanwhile echoed Turkish talking points by saying N Syria needs to be "cleaned out"
Also sanctions from this fake agreement most likely will not be enforced. Basically trump/Pence legitimized the Turkish murderous operation
This episode will be a black stain on America for decades. Our allies will never trust us, we will have difficulties obtaining on the ground intel on any existing threats especially with ISIS reemerging. That endangers America's homeland and Americans everywhere

All to prove that Russia didn't attack us in 2o16. How is Barr not being stopped? This is dangerous for our national security now because Russia has been ramping up their efforts to attack our next elections. It is also dangerous because our allies will not share critical intel

Our media is something else. They are more concerned about timing of impeachment than Trump and his criminal cronies extorting countries for fabricated material against political opponents, conspiring with foreign enemies, dangerously betraying our allies (both Ukraine/Kurds)
They are also so concerned about how shameless Republican leaders feel instead of holding them accountable for backing a lunatic authoritarian who is a danger to America's national security and the world quite frankly. It's really disturbing.
No wonder no one in media bothered investigating McConnell, Graham, Nunes, etc to find out why exactly they are betraying America and our traditional allies for Russia and power

Never has the self-suicide of #Syria's mainstream opposition been more clear than in recent days.

#Afrin was really bad, but this NE incursion (its manner; its consequences etc.) is truly beyond the pale -- in truth, what we've witnessed is a #Turkish campaign through-&-through.
It's clear now that the Dec 2016 loss of #Aleppo - in large part due to #Turkey selling it out to #Russia - was *the* turning point.

Opposition factions lost any sense of autonomy of action & over the years that followed, everyone but #JFS-#HTS & #AlQaeda existed *for* #Ankara.
An #American presence in NE #Syria kept at least some of this #Turkish ambition under wraps (just ), but #Trump's naive (or malicious?) "green light" decision after speaking with #Erdogan let everything loose.

Only now are we seeing the consequences -- and they're not yet clear.

In an earlier thread I had explained the complex history of #Kurds:

I will explain why #Trump withdrew from Northern #Syria and now intends to withdraw from Syria entirely. This is a geopolitical masterstroke that kills several birds with one stone.
Our starting point has to be his map. #Kurds now control a wide swathe of Syrian territory - more than they have perhaps in their entire history. A significant part of those areas has large Sunni Arab populations.

The Arabs do not want to be ruled by #Kurds but have no choice.
To the West, you have areas under the control of the Assad regime. To the North you have hostile #Turkey. To the East you have KRG Kurds who are friendly with Erdogan and do not like the YPG Kurds. To the south east, you have Shia Arabs who are mildly hostile to #Kurds.

A serious and basic point to keep in mind:

Turkey's priority is to dismantle the YPG statelet, so it's not a horrible idea for it if the Assad regime takes over Kurdish areas.

So if Russia and the regime take areas, that still works for Turkey. But Turkey has conditions.
Turkey had that talk with Russia before it fought in Afrin last year, the YPG pleaded with Russia to save them from the imminent Turkish incursion & even asked Assad to fight with it. But the two sides didn't agree on specifics. Turkey wasn't convinced Russia would do the trick.
This time might be different. Turkey will be happy to have Russia and the regime take over Kurdish areas, as long as they ensure the YPG won't find safe havens.

That's another part where short-termist & de-contextualized thinking about the battles in Raqqa etc failed.
