Listening to Olga Kostopoulou discuss new diagnostic decision support, where software uses patient history and characteristics to suggest potential diagnoses and encourage electronic coding #SMDM19
How does this affect diagnosing? To evaluate, they followed over 30 GPs, documenting what they wrote free hand and what they coded in the computer, and the final diagnoses that the GPs gave to the patients.
They found: on average, when they used the aid, more information was documented, it was more likely to be coded (rather than handwritten), and gave more consistent diagnoses. Uptake of this software could improve our claims data and, in turn, our claims based research!
Audience members asked whether this is better than medical scribes? Unknown! Probably more a matter of feasibility of implementation.
