🚨 THIS JUST HAPPENED.

Former NI Secretary @OwenPaterson has quoted Michael Collins - in Westminster - as he voices his support for the #Brexit deal.

He ended it by saying "I hope I don't follow the fate of Michael Collins".

She said she respected the fact that Ireland has sought to bring about solutions which would keep the UK in the closest possible future relationship with the EU....

Taoiseach @LeoVaradkar says he trusts @BorisJohnson and they remain in contact:

He does say that the gap between the EU & UK remains very wide.
Asked about unionist consent to a Brexit Deal - @LeoVaradkar says it’s important to remember that #Brexit does not have cross-community consent in Northern Ireland.

PM is right today when says there is no appetite in EU to drag the #Brexit process out any further BUT if UK request came for another extension to hold general election, 2nd referendum or referendum on this Brexit deal, I cannot imagine EU saying no /1
For so many reasons: a) Blame game. EU has never wanted to be seen as the ones to throw UK out of door. And b) partly to blame for a no deal Brexit which wld hit their citizens. This is why PM was right - sticking to a no deal threat made the EU engage again in negotiations BUT/3
EU concessions in Brexit renegotiations are seen as in EU to be to their advantage. Eg NIreland is potentially 'forever' following EU customs code and regulations on goods now /4

1) lot of good people getting themselves all bent out of shape on the #LibDems policy of #RevokeA50 without really absorbing that this is all about Labour zigzagging on a #FinalSay

It's Corbyn's fault for demanding a GE!
2) a reminder of recent history.

Anti #Brexit/no deal groups focused on a #PeoplesVote 2 years ago. Labour conference last year tried to push Corbyn into an unambiguous PV stance with a ton of CLPs putting motions forward - they were sidelined
3) the Labour powers that be morphed 100s of "we want a PV" motions into "we want a GE, if we can't get that, we look at other options, one of which might be a PV"

This happened - and it allowed Corbyn to fuck about for 2 years

1) #Brexit Facts that shouldn't need stating
It's ridiculous that this has to be repeated, and even more ridiculous that our Media seem genuinely incapable of stating these facts, but the brexit paradox is very, very simple to articulate in 5 or so statements - thread
a) If you want to have different trade positions (tariffs, regulations, quotas, whatever) either side of a border - *you have to have a border*
The backstop is needed because the reality is there is no answer to "global Britain & new trade deals" and the Irish border
b) There will *never* be a majority of support for any #Brexit deal, not even among leavers - hard Brexit, Soft Brexit and May's half way fudge are all fundamentally opposed to each other & the Leave vote is split amongst them. No Brexit proposition can ever be popular

The increased support for a ‘no deal’ Brexit is the ultimate failure of the Leave movement. It’s the inevitable consequence of the refusal to grasp details, come to terms with complexity & coalesce around a plan. Compromise can be frustrating. So instead they will have a tantrum.
Some Brexiteers advocated sensible solutions. The EFTA/EEA solution gained a lot of traction in the years before the ref. Even Farage had promoted it & countless others. See Farage below from 2011 essentially making the ‘Liberal Leave’ case!

While there is widespread disagreement about whether the EU will blink or not over #Brexit (spoiler alert: the bloc is more flexible than it wants to indicate right now) it’s arguably more useful to think what kind of eventual ‘concessions’ we might be talking about from the EU 1
It’s true the EU has a history of blinking in the last moment BUT only in its own interest. In the Greek debt crisis the bloc chose to keep Greece in the eurozone in order (leaders thought) to better protect the whole currency 2
When I say EU will be more flexible than seems right now, I don’t mean ditching the backstop. EU leaders want to protect the single market. They earn more from it than from trade with UK alone. Protecting border on island of Ireland = protecting SM as well as NI peace process 3

The Nigel Dodds interview on #Brexit and the Customs Union issue is worth reading in full...it takes us to heart of problem for May/UK. A quick thread. /1

First point: Dodds is adamant there must be an 'all-UK solution' - so he threatens to bring down Govt if Northern Ireland gets left *on its own* in the Customs Union, while UK is free to diverge. BUT he doesn't totally rule all of UK staying in customs union. /2
Dodds's forceful articulation of DUP red line appears to close off one of the obvious areas of 'give' in the Customs Union conundrum - increased checks on goods between UK mainland and Northern Ireland. Unless someone calls DUP bluff. /3
