Tears again watching outtakes from #ElijahCummings' homegoing. What an extraordinary series of speeches, what a panoply of remarkable women and men. What a gift he was to all who knew him. And of course, to all of us.

I keep coming back to #ElijahCummings service today because the humility of the more famous speakers really struck me--they were in awe of having known him. And the joy with which his wife and daughters spoke about him. So much there.
But #ElijahCummings' wife Maya singling out the Clintons and Obama--the way she detailed what they each meant in her spouse's life--that was so deeply personal. That was about telling people how bridges are built. Even from the other side, he is telling us what needs to be done.

A year ago today a man inflamed by Trump's rhetoric shot up the #TreeofLife synagogue in Pittsburgh, killing 11, wounding 6.
I spent the next days interviewing people for the story & as with the Dylann Roof mass shooting, which I also wrote about, I had the most profound sadness.
These people, these congregations, had made a welcoming space for anyone who wanted it. And a killer driven by hate came into that sacred, welcoming space and killed and wounded innocent, caring, generous people. It is deeply heartbreaking to revisit these awful crimes.
In both instances elderly congregants were targeted. Who shoots old women and men as they worship? What drives someone to cut to the heart of people's faith in a synagogue and a black church? Haters want to create a climate of fear and distrust. To take away our sense of safety.

The anti-climactic announcement about Baghdadi's killing has no real meaning for Americans. We were never under attack by ISIS. Trump declared ISIS defeated a year ago.This all feels very attenuated and meh. ISIS already has new leadership in place. This is a bark without a bite.
Trump thinks this is a bin Laden moment, but even killing bin Laden, when we all had the memory of WTC Towers ablaze forever seered in our collective memory, didn't feel all that present.
Wars fought far from home by a small group of rotating Americans have innured us to this.
Trump is going to expect that killing Baghdadi is a reprieve from impeachment. House Democrats are going to have to push back on that notion immediately.
This is a distraction. And it is, fundamentally, meaningless for the US.
Trump vitiated his own plaudits anyway in 2012.↘️

I keep seeing this and each time I am stunned anew.
"Be respectful and they won't shoot you in the back of the head" has literally worked for no one.
12 year old Tamir Rice was playing in the park.
Laquan McDonald was the equivalent of a city block away with his back to police.
I could do a dozen tweets of names of black people whose stories I have covered who did everything right and still got shot to death.
How is it possible for a presidential candidate--a progressive candidate at that--to be this out of touch with what it is to be black in America?
I would add to this that Philando Castille was shot to death IN HIS CAR with his 4 yr old kid in the back seat. He still had his seat belt on as he was dying on camera. We heard the exchange. He could not possibly have been more respectful. The answer can't be "Be nice."

#Women have much greater #hormonal fluctuations each month than #men do. Simply put, a woman's thought life and #emotions are more prone to high highs, and low lows. This isn't a "design flaw" but rather how #God made a #woman to be in touch with the needs of small #children.
Nothing is more short-sighted as a #man than viewing a #woman as an "overly emotional" or "flawed" version of a man's thought process or #emotions. A woman that does not let her emotions out will become very #passiveaggressive, #depressed or #angry. Your job is to be an #outlet.
