The anti-climactic announcement about Baghdadi's killing has no real meaning for Americans. We were never under attack by ISIS. Trump declared ISIS defeated a year ago.This all feels very attenuated and meh. ISIS already has new leadership in place. This is a bark without a bite.
Trump thinks this is a bin Laden moment, but even killing bin Laden, when we all had the memory of WTC Towers ablaze forever seered in our collective memory, didn't feel all that present.
Wars fought far from home by a small group of rotating Americans have innured us to this.
Trump is going to expect that killing Baghdadi is a reprieve from impeachment. House Democrats are going to have to push back on that notion immediately.
This is a distraction. And it is, fundamentally, meaningless for the US.
Trump vitiated his own plaudits anyway in 2012.↘️

In the past few days @KamalaHarris, the only black woman in the primary and one of only three black women to run for president (the others were Shirley Chisholm and Carol Moseley-Braun) has done some impressive work.

Harris challenged the President, she held a college accoubtable, she forced the other top Democrats to address CJR. She made a slew of headlines, but some misrepresented her work and others usurped it, crediting "Democrats" with her work.

Then @60Minutes gave @JoeBiden a free interview. With his wife as cheerleader. There was no rationale given for the interview at the former VP's home over days. Just an opportunity to bolster his flagging poll numbers & fundraising. No discussion of policy. No hard questions.

Your periodic reminder that being chronically ill with something like #cancer and/or being #disabled is a full-time job in addition to your full-time job.
I have been working since 6:30 but have had to spend a couple hours trying to navigate the health insurance bureaucracy.

Last week when I refilled my Rx for one of my lung meds, I was informed the price had been raised to $2,700+ So I have spent hours since attempting to find out how I can get this paid for. HOURS. Kafkaesque hours. And my meds run out tomorrow. It is madness.

The last person I spoke with actually said to me "people think their medication will be paid for magically" and then "I understand how you feel."
And you cannot scream and curse at these folks because they didn't make the rules but...who can afford these meds?

A year ago today a man inflamed by Trump's rhetoric shot up the #TreeofLife synagogue in Pittsburgh, killing 11, wounding 6.
I spent the next days interviewing people for the story & as with the Dylann Roof mass shooting, which I also wrote about, I had the most profound sadness.
These people, these congregations, had made a welcoming space for anyone who wanted it. And a killer driven by hate came into that sacred, welcoming space and killed and wounded innocent, caring, generous people. It is deeply heartbreaking to revisit these awful crimes.
In both instances elderly congregants were targeted. Who shoots old women and men as they worship? What drives someone to cut to the heart of people's faith in a synagogue and a black church? Haters want to create a climate of fear and distrust. To take away our sense of safety.

I hate to say it, but if reported death of #Baghdadi is true (by suicide blast or Special Ops), it’s hardly the end of ISIS.

ISIS isn’t structured like Al Qaeda; ISIS’ organization was intended to be resilient in the event of decapitation strikes.

Regrouping won’t be as hard.
ISIS learned from Al Qaeda’s missteps - a network structure overly reliant on a singular charismatic figurehead like Bin Laden.

Post-Afghanistan, OBL was marginalized (in hiding); the Iraq war allowed (a new) Al Qaeda to regroup.

Baghdadi’s, sadly, death isn’t a game-changer.

It makes sense for Baghdadi to choose an unlikely place like Idlib, but I’m frankly surprised he wasn’t in Iraq. Syria was never going to be a good hiding place. Very likely he was moving around & most likely Turkey was involved.
This area of Syria is like an open book for Russia, the Syrian regime, and/or Turkey. Plus it’s high concern for the US, considering al-Qaeda and international terrorism.
Additionally, ISIS cells have been a frequent target of other rival jihadists in that area. That’s an added enemy for him to live there.

It must’ve been a temp domicile.

If I have to guess, he moved there right after that video when he appeared for the 1st time since 2014.

I have a very favorite castle. It is Arundel on the southern coast of England. It isn't quite 1,000 years old, yet, but it soon will be. During that time, it was almost never under attack. It is too well built and located and fortified. It is a very safe place to be.
During its almost millennium, it has been besieged by serious attackers, and changed hands of rule only 3 times, and in each case, not one person on the inside of the castle died. Surrender was negotiated to include lives, and was honorably accepted, no deaths. Safety defined.
