Has anyone even bothered trying to explain how an extension of the franchise to 16/17 year olds and EU citizens could work for a December election?
Loads of EU citizens ended up in a position where they couldn’t vote because they hadn’t submitted the right paperwork in the EU elections, in which they have a complete right to vote. It would be an administrative nightmare.
There could be a very strong case for allowing 16 year olds and/or EU citizens the right to vote in general elections. I’m not sure the case is that strong, given the obvious time constraints, for this one.
Moreover an extension of the franchise is probably something for which people should give their consent and a mandate in a, well, general election.
