Main reason for Brahmin, non - Brahmin divide in TN.

When the general election for the Indian Legislative Assembly was held in 1916, T.M. Nair was a candidate. He was defeated by V.S. Srinivasa Sastri, a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi.
In the same election, P. Ramalingam, who represented the landed gentry, and Piti Thyagaraya Chetti and K.G. Reddy Naidu, who contested from other constituencies, were also defeated.
Having lost the election due to lack of public support, these personages met and analysed the reason for their defeat. They came to the conclusion that Brahmins had prevented them from getting elected. Hence, they opted for anti-Brahminism as their plank.
This is the genesis of the ‘South Indian Welfare Rights Asssociation’, which also launched the English daily, ‘Justice’. Gradually, the public had started calling the South Indian Welfare Rights Association as Justice Party or ‘Needhi Katchi’.
