In the wake of this story, Steyer's campaign tells me @SCDP is essentially lying/retaliating:

"The narrative that the State Party and the DNC is pushing is purely false. This seems to be an attack on the former employee due to leaving his job to work with the Steyer campaign."
@scdp More to come.
@scdp Story in edit. Meanwhile my AP colleague @michellelprice is on the campaign trail with Steyer in Nevada. We have some questions for Steyer regarding the campaign's comments that she will ask if he makes himself available.

His campaign event is currently in progress. Stay tuned.
@scdp @michellelprice UPDATE: In Nevada, @TomSteyer walks back his campaign's earlier statement, telling my colleague @michellelprice:

"We are doing an internal investigation. We take it really, really, really seriously."
"We're going to get to the bottom of it as fast as possible ..." (1/2)
When specifically asked about his campaign's earlier comments that Sims' actions were a "mistake," Steyer responded:

"I really haven't had a chance to review the evidence because I've been here all day."

He added "We will do the right thing, period." (2/2)
Steyer’s SC spox called the incident “a mistake” and accused @SCDP of lying about what happened.
But Steyer says he hasn't had a chance to review the evidence, is taking the allegations seriously, and investigating.
My story on SC's latest primary drama.

@scdp UPDATE: Now Steyer's campaign manager has issued a statement saying that an investigation has ALREADY been completed and Sims has resigned from the campaign.
@scdp Additionally, Steyer's campaign manager says that the campaign has apologized to the @SCDP and the @DNC, adding:

"Tom Steyer and the Steyer campaign extend our deepest apology to Senator @KamalaHarris and her campaign."
@scdp @DNC @KamalaHarris The final version of my story - with 3 differing statements from Steyer's camp - that ultimately end w/ an apology & resignation of a staffer.
Story first broken by the great @jslovegrove.
Shoutout to my NV colleague @michellelprice for Steyer's quotes. apnews.com/896d47c8cdd14f…
